Routinely, Marine Platforms provides on the job training for ROV pilot technician Trainees and as they advance all pilot technicians are registered with IMCA (International Marine Contractors Association) giving access to global training and competence development framework.

While working as trainees in the operational location, trainee technicians are required to undergo additional development in-house through several development mechanisms set up by the company.

To enhance these trainings, Marine Platforms have purchased and set up an ROV simulation centre in our Lagos office. The purchase of the VMAX ROV simulator is a dedication to the training and development of our Pilot technicians. It provides standard functionality of any ROV equipment and allows accurate simulation of the equipment in a subsea environment. With extremely realistic visuals for lighting and highly accurate physics simulation and collision that can have a drastic impact on both mission execution as well as proper training practices.

The VMAX simulator makes use of a XLX EVO ROV/TMS console interface. It includes full hydraulic controls, sonar, titan 4 manipulator, rigmaster manipulator, TMS controls and full light and camera controls.

There are various scenarios built to familiarize the pilots with situational awareness, manipulator control, tether management, navigation and use of various tooling; all which are
necessary to become a competent pilot technical.

Arriving at the Astican yard, the training commenced with the dry-docking of the vessel and isolation of machinery as well as other safety precautions. This proceeded to the inspection of the vessel hull and draft that are usually submerged in water. They witnessed the engine removal, rebuild and installation of new engines, removal, cleaning and installation of coolers, overhauling of pumps and electric motors, overhauling and changing of bearings on all the thruster motors. The training scope also extended to the crane repair and maintenance as well as the discharge of vessel waste. There were daily activities and measures to monitor the engagement and participation of each trainee. The training came to an end with a major task for the trainees to reassemble the engine room which was a challenging experience but turned out successful.

Despite the simultaneous activities ongoing, the dry-docking operations came to a successful end without lost time incident. It is worthy of mention that these trainees are recipients of the NCDMB traineeâs skill acquisition program executed under the Abo 3, 8, 12 transportation, installation & pre-commissioning contract with Nigerian Agip Exploration (NAE).

Alongside the operating well of the Phase 3 development Abo 3, NAE plans to add a new well- Abo 8 to the field which covers was tieback to the existing FPSO. The third well – Abo-12 is scheduled to take place in the year 2015. For the execution of this project, Marine Platforms alongside her partner, CEONA will be deploying the Normand Pacific; an installation and construction vessel (OCV) with 200t AHC Crane, 75t vertical lay tower and a reel drive system of 400t.

The Abo field is a deepwater oil field located in OML125, some 55 km off the Nigerian coast and holds water depths of around 450 to 750 meters, The field which commenced production in 2003, forms part of a production sharing contract between ENI subsidiary Nigerian Agip Exploration (NAE), NNPC, Shell Nigeria and Oando Plc. It is operated by Nigerian Agip Exploration (NAE), a subsidiary of Italy\’s Eni and is historically known as was the first deepwater field developed in Nigeria.

The award was given in recognition of working over 50,000 manhours for the Nigerian and mid-Africa strategic business unit without a recordable injury in the year 2018.

This award is coming months after Marine Platforms celebrated 2 million-man hours without lost time incident on the Agbami field operations after almost a decade of operations on the Chevron Stardeep Agbami field with Marine Platforms owned and chartered vessels.

Marine Platforms currently delivers the provision of Inspection, Repair and Maintenance services (IRM) on the Agbami field. Marine Platforms also delivers the Agbami phase 3 transportation, installation, and pre-commissioning of umbilicals, risers, flowlines, flexible pipelines, manifolds, and jumpers. Both contracts run concurrently.

The training was secured under the SNEPCo contract provision of ROV and ancillary services executed by Marine Platforms for Shell Nigeria Exploration & Production Nigeria Ltd. Areas of training specification were design & engineering, cadet sea time, rigging, and ROV services.

With a total of 23 trainees, the training curriculum was developed to grant participants maximum exposure to the operational workings of the oil industry from a service contractors perspective. The extensive programme was structured over one year and was designed to give hands on experience in the subsea segment of the oil and gas industry. The training methods involved in-house lectures, course work, external trainings and practical hands-on operation regulated by industry professionals.

The trainees also experienced several practical exercises aboard Marine Platforms ‘chartered’ offshore support vessel, the Siem Marlin and also Marine Platforms owned and full duty paid multipurpose support vessels, the African Inspiration and the African vision. They also had practical involvement in the mobilization and execution of major work scopes.

At the Close Out Ceremony marking the end of the program, SNEPCo’s Subsea Intervention Manager, said “People development is what we value. We have had so many achievements on the Agbami phase 3 project and this is another feat that adds value. These set of skills will enable them to develop their career and make them valuable to the oil and gas industry in Nigeria”

Dr Ama Ikuru the General Manager, Capacity Building Division in NCDMB added that this was another major outcome which further contributes to the human capacity development in Nigeria. He commended them after having assessed their performance in the closeout evaluation.

The Chief Finance and Administrative Officer of Marine Platforms, Baji Nyam, noted that Marine Platforms was indeed grateful and proud to have had this opportunity to promote the development of Nigerians. The growth of local capacity in both human and equipment is a key aspect of the company’s objectives in its contribution to nation building through local content.

Marine Platforms training and development programs have increased consistently over the years in various areas such as the training of seafarers, maritime cadets, ROV pilot technicians and subsea engineers. It is Marine Platforms dream to see that Nigerian youths of today are well prepared to take over the operations in the Nigerian oil and gas and maritime industries.

Discovered in 2005 and 2006, the Zabazaba and Etan integrated development project is a greenfield hydrocarbon development with an offshore license block covering an area of 1,958 km2. The block is located at a distance of 140km from the Nigerian coast with water depths ranging from 1,200 to 2,400m. The PSA for the block is between NAE (50%) and SNEPCo (50%), where NAE is the Operator.

Chevron Agbami field is located offshore Nigeria in the central Niger delta approximately 113 km (70 miles) south-southwest of the nearest Nigerian shoreline, and approximately 354 km (220 miles) southeast of the city of Lagos. It lies in water depths ranging from 1280 to 1650 m (4,200 to 5,400 feet)
